To lease a vehicle through the Motability Scheme, you need to currently receive one of the qualifying Mobility Allowances. It's a benefit designed to help with the extra costs that people below State Pension age face because of a long-term health condition or disability.
The qualifying Mobility Allowance is currently worth £71.00 a week.
There are different types of qualifying Mobility Allowance, including the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland only), the Enhanced Rate Mobility part of the Adult Disability Payment (Scotland only) and the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)*.
The weekly rental cost of most Motability vehicles is the 'Total Allowance' (all of the Mobility Allowance), but if you choose a vehicle that costs less than the 'Total Allowance', the remainder of your money will come back to you via your allowance provider.
There are a great range of smaller cars that you can lease through the Motability Scheme that cost less than the current weekly Mobility Allowance amount and if you choose one of these vehicles, Motability call this type of lease a 'constant' lease.
With a 'constant' lease Motability car, you get to keep any difference between the Mobility Allowance amount and the Fixed Weekly Rental amount, including if it goes up in the future.

The total weekly saving would actually end up being more than £16.39 a week, as the value of the Mobility Allowance rises annually each April in line with CPI inflation.
