EV Charging At Home For Your Electric Motability Car
With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), ‘refuelling’ for many drivers has take...
The number of 100% electric vehicles (EVs) available through the Motability Scheme is growing all the time. A complimentary charging solution is now included with every battery powered EV leased through Motability (in partnership with Ohme and BP Pulse), and as consumer demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, we expect to see significant growth as car manufacturers release more electric city cars, family hatchbacks and SUVs. Here are all the electric cars currently available through Motability.
When compared to the cost of petrol or diesel, running your Motability car purely on electricity is always going to be significantly cheaper. An EV can drive for around 100 miles at a cost of £2 to £4 when charged at home, compared to £13 to £16 for an average petrol or diesel vehicle.
A 100% electric car gets all its power from rechargeable batteries, which means it has no internal combustion engine and produces zero tailpipe emissions when being driven.
This means they are more climate friendly and help to improve air quality, particularly in urban areas.
Choose an electric Motability car and you'll never have to visit a petrol station again! Installing a fitted home charging point means it’s easy to charge your electric car at home.
The Motability worry-free motoring package now includes a no-cost charging solution for Motability customers who order a battery electric car.
Working in partnership with Ohme and BP Pulse, customers are now able to choose between a fitted home charging point or access to an on-street charging network. A fitted home charging point will suit Motability customers with off-street parking, while access to the nationwide charging network will be more suitable for customers who park their vehicle somewhere else.
Ohme BP Pulse Electric Charging Network
The installation of the charging point will be handled directly by Ohme, and whilst the charging solution is free (for simple installations), customers are still responsible for paying for the electricity used to charge their vehicle.
Most Motability customers who choose an EV will charge their car at home during the night. In the morning, the car has a full battery ready for the day ahead.
A compact, all-weather charging point can be installed inside the garage or outside your home, and the cost of this is now included with the lease of your electric vehicle. Once a qualified installer has installed the charger at your home, you’ll be able to plug in and charge your vehicle to full capacity.
Around 18 million (65%) of homes in the UK either have, or could have, off-street parking for a minimum of one vehicle, according to figures from the RAC. However, that leaves more than 8 million homes without access to home charging, including motorists living in flats.
There are alternatives, including chargers at local supermarkets, shopping centres and local charging hubs, and many local authorities have started to install on-street chargers. Drivers using public chargers are likely to face higher costs to charge their EV than those able to charge at home, with prices varying depending on which company owns the charging point and where it is (although many supermarkets and shopping centres currently offer free EV charging).
If you don’t have off-street parking at home, Motability customers who choose an EV are given the option of access to the BP Pulse network, which has over 8,750 discounted or free charging EV charge points across the UK.
The Government has already announced that by 2030 no brand new petrol or diesel cars can be sold by manufacturers and motor dealers in the UK, and that by 2035 hybrids will also be banned. This means that in around 12 years' time, the new cars on sale here will be almost entirely EVs. Car manufacturers have until then to replace the petrol, diesel and hybrid cars currently available with EVs that are suitable for every driver.
Of course, the EVs on sale at that moment aren’t suitable for everyone. Working out smart solutions for drivers who regularly travel a long distance, or who don’t have access to an electric car charger at home will be crucial over the coming years.
Still, everyone thinks that 2023 will be a breakthrough year for EVs, with the electric cars on offer through UK showrooms expected to increase dramatically and annual sales likely to smash through the 400,000 mark.
Electric Motability cars like the Honda-e, the Renault Zoe, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, the Peugeot e-208, the Mini Electric and the MG4 can already be ordered here in the UK, with more new electric models set to follow this year and next.
As car manufacturers bring more and more pure electric vehicles to market, Motability will certainly add more of these popular and ground-breaking cars to the Motability Scheme, giving Motability customers who want a car with zero harmful emissions and low running costs more choice than ever before.
