Nearly half of all the cars ordered through the Motability Scheme come with an automatic gearbox. Not only is a car with an automatic gearbox easier and more relaxing to drive than a manual (because it frees the driver from having to shift the gears manually), in some cases they are also more economical to drive and can cost less to maintain. Electric Motability cars and most hybrid Motability cars come with an 'automatic' gearbox as standard.
Motability cars with an automatic gearbox often require a higher Motability Advance Payment than a manual version of the same car, though there are currently around 50 automatics cars available with £0 Advance Payment and nearly 140 with an Advance Payment under £500.
Motability estimate that an automatic (or semi-automatic) gearbox is now chosen by roughly 45% of all drivers who drive a car leased through the Motability Scheme.
There are currently just over 700 automatic cars, SUVs and MPVs available to view and test drive at Motability dealerships nationwide.
The Motability Scheme supports disabled people who want to lease a safe, reliable and affordable new car. By simply exchanging their higher (or enhanced) rate of mobility benefit, Motability will supply a brand new automatic car of the customer’s choice through a local accredited Motability dealer. The agreement also includes insurance for up to 3 drivers, servicing, breakdown cover, tyre and windscreen cover plus an impressive mileage allowance of 60,000 miles over 3 years.
